“COVID-19 hit us, but it didn’t stop us.”
That was how Committee Chair, Kevin Jackson, ended his speech after being presented a surprise thank-you gift from his fellow committee members during the banquet for the 47th Annual Apex Golf Tournament.
More on that in a minute, but first – can we talk about how happy everyone was to be back?!
After the pandemic dampened plans in 2020, we were more than ready to come together again to relish in the game of golf, see some familiar faces, and decompress after all the commotion of the past year and a half.
While there were no dances this year due to continuing restrictions, it was really great to be able to get back to playing the game that started it all.
Despite the gap year, Patrick Jackson returned to the tournament and defended his title from 2019, never skipping a beat.
Belinda Bennicke won the top prize for the women, while Raymond Tynes and Chanel Smith won for the Men’s 9-hole and Women’s 9-hole, respectively.
The dinner and prize presentation was once again held at the Best Western. As things got underway, Committee Chair, Kevin Jackson, was surprised with a special gift from his peers in recognition of his hard work, dedication and leadership around Apex.
The gift? His signature: a bottle of Crown Royal.
To our students, there were 4 scholarships awarded. Those moving onto post-secondary education in 2021 included:
  • William Henderson, University of Ottawa
  • DeAndre Paris, Dalhousie University
  • Tori Parker, Dalhousie University
  • Diamar Richards, St. Francis Xavier University
DeAndre also received the Robbie Jones Award for his community achievements, commitment and contribution.

It’s also worth mentioning that, in 2020, there were still 9 scholarships awarded, despite there being no tournament. A special thank you to everyone who donated and continues to donate in support of the ongoing education of our youth.
While we weren’t able to have any other organized events this year (including the softball game which, unfortunately, got rained out), we definitely made the most of it… Outside of golf, we can count numerous (safe) community gatherings that kept the laughs going well past the 18th hole.
Thanks again to everyone who came out. I think it’s safe to say, we’re officially back in business!
